Chocolate mousse ⎮ Only 2 ingredients ⎮ vegan

Do you know aquafaba? No right…. I’d never heard of it before until I saw a video on Instagram where the liquid from a can of chickpeas turned into what looked liked egg whites when whisked. What on earth I thought and Googled it. I learned that it’s called aquafaba and can be used as a vegan substitute and can be used for marengs and other goodies. I experimentet and ended up with this lovely chocolate mousse.

Here are 2 reasons why you should try this recipe:

  1. It’s super easy and you probably already have the ingredients in your cupboard
  2. Contains far fewer calories than ‘classic’ chocolate mousse with cream and eggs

Vegan, low-fat chocolate mousse

30 mins
Serves 4



Liquid from 1 can of chickpeas (a.k.a aquafaba)
100g dark chocolate (preferably 70% or over)
1 pinch of salt
A little bit of sugar or sweetener – optional
The juice from ½ an orange – optional


  1. Melt the chocolate over a bain marie. Add the salt, orange juice and sugar if using
  2. Whisk the chickpea liquid or aquafaba into peaks. This takes time, so be patient
  3. Start by folding a few spoonfuls of the aquafaba into the chocolate. If you didn’t use orange juice, let the melted chocolate cool slightly
  4. Fold the chocolate mixture into the remaining aquafaba
  5. Pour the mousse into serving glasses and let set in the fridge for at least 1 hour
